Update on French Social Security Changes

Nick Saul, CEO of the BachmannHR Group attended the seminar held at the Monaco Yacht Club on the 17th May where presentations were given by representatives of the French Government in regard to the introduction of the new legislation from the 1st July 2017 on payment of French Social Insurance for marine crew domiciled in France.

Emergency Schengen Visa on Arrival at Amsterdam and Paris

As from the 2nd March, it is now possible to have a Schengen Visa issued at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) and Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG) for Marine passengers arriving on Air France and KLM who were unable to obtain a Schengen visa before departure due to short notice (within 10 days of their departure).

This service is available only for:

- Seamen passengers arriving at CDG on an Air France operated flight, whose destination is a French port only (e.g. LEH, MRS, NCE) as their final destination:

France Unveils New Labour Law Rules

The French maritime affairs department has recently published guidance on planned changes to the country's labour laws which would apply to commercial vessels under 650gt that operate between French ports.

If the rules are applied to yachts operating in French waters, owners and management would be required to complete a "declaration of activity" and to provide evidence of compliance with social security agreements; give seafarers details to French labour inspection offices; and to translate all employment documents into French.

Yacht broker convicted of fraud

A former Dana Point yacht broker was sentenced Monday to seven years in prison for stealing more than $1.3 million from 26 people in a fraudulent investment and sales scheme, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Edward Sellers Fitzgerald, 62, pleaded guilty to eight counts of theft from an elder, 19 counts of using untrue statements in the purchase or sale of a security, 17 counts of grand theft, and 14 counts of issuing non-sufficient checks with the intent to defraud.
